One thing that every Mario Kart fan should always keep in mind is coins. They are quietly one of the most important things to collect during a race. Picking them up gradually raises your kart’s top speed for that course, and you can hold up to 20 at a time. So, yes, do not ignore them when you spot them scattered across the road!
Speed Boosts That Can Change Everything
There are actually several ways to give yourself a speed advantage, and knowing all of them can make a real difference between finishing first and finishing fourth.
At the very start of a race, timing is everything. Hold down the A Button at just the right moment during the countdown and you will launch off the starting line with a satisfying rocket boost. Once you are out on the course, drifting around corners is your best friend. Hold the R Button whilst tilting your stick into the turn, and the longer you hold it, the more powerful your boost will be when you release. Keep an eye on the colour of your sparks, they tell you how much power you are building up!
There is also a lesser-known trick worth trying: tucking in just behind another driver for a few seconds. Hang in there and a drafting boost will kick in automatically. And whenever you hit a ramp, press R right as you take off for a stylish trick that rewards you with a boost on landing.
