Big news for our beloved Mario Kart fans! Nintendo recently hosted its very first worldwide racing event for Mario Kart World on Nintendo Switch 2, and we just had to talk about it. It was called the Mario Kart World Global Online Challenge, and if you missed it, we are here to fill you in on everything that went down!
What Was the Mario Kart World Global Online Challenge?
The Mario Kart World Global Online Challenge was a week-long online tournament that ran from 5th to 12th June 2026. Players from around the world jumped in and competed under a shared set of race conditions, which made it feel like a proper global showdown. Every participating Mario Kart fan started with a versus rating of 3,000 points, and that rating went up or down depending on finishing position after each race. The more you raced and the higher you placed, the better your final standing would be.
To take part, players needed a copy of Mario Kart World, a Nintendo Switch 2 connected online, and any active Nintendo Switch Online membership — even a free 7-day trial counted, which was a lovely touch from Nintendo.

What Happens After the Event?
Here is the exciting part for any competitive Mario Kart fan out there! Roughly one week after the event wrapped up, Nintendo planned to publish a leaderboard on their official website featuring the top 100 highest-rated players globally. And if climbing the overall rankings felt too daunting, there was also a character-specific leaderboard. So, even if you were not gunning for the overall top spots, you could still aim to be the number-one Toad, Waluigi, or even Cow on the planet. How fun is that?
We absolutely love seeing Nintendo bring us together like this. Whether you spent every evening grinding race after race or just hopped in for a casual few laps, it was a brilliant way to celebrate Mario Kart World with players worldwide.

So, our beloved Mario Kart fan, did you manage to join the Mario Kart World Global Online Challenge? How did your rating end up? We would love to hear all about your experience in the comments below!
